Awarded India's Padma Bhushan for philanthropic work across the country

The Government of India awarded Gates the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian honor, recognizing the Gates Foundation's investments in polio eradication, HIV/AIDS prevention, tuberculosis control, and agricultural development for smallholder farmers across India. The Foundation had by 2015 invested over $3 billion in India. India declared itself polio-free in 2014 — a landmark the Gates Foundation considered one of its most significant achievements.
